Is It Safe To Maintain A Calorie-controlled Diet Whilst Pregnant?
I’m 26 and not yet pregnant, nor trying. However, my partner and I are talking about children and are possibly going to start trying in the next year or so.
The problem is that I have struggled with my weight most of my life, and have spent all of my life overweight. At my largest, I was a size 20 – 22 but I have recently slimmed down to a size 16 and am fast approaching a size 14. My final target is size 10 or 12.
I know that most women tend to gain weight whilst pregnant, and I know that actual weight gain is unavoidable because of the weight of the baby. But I also know that some women can be left with a good few stones in extra weight even after the baby has been born and I really don’t want that. I have so far lost the weight through simple diet and exercise – I haven’t attended any groups, have not even considered slimming pills or anything like that. I just went for the good old-fashioned ‘eat less, exercise more’ and it really has worked wonders for me so far.
At the moment, I limit my daily calorie intake to around 1500 calories, and I do 30 minutes a day on my exercise bike, which can burn anything from 300 – 500 calories per day. This means that my overall daily calorie intake is actually about 1200.
So if I was to get pregnant, what is a safe but low amount of calories to consume in a day? And also, would it be safe to continue exercising every day in the early stages of the pregnancy? Of course I know that I wouldn’t be able to once my bump was quite big!
I do want to have children, but I have to be strict with my weight in order to remain healthy. I am also very conscious of how I look and i really don’t want to end up a fatty after having a baby.
So basically what I’m asking is – is it possible to have a baby and be left with very little excess weight afterwards, or preferably none at all?
yep, i had to watch my carb because i am diabetic,
yes, but you have to add 300 calories to your diet. and it is possible to get ride of the weight, i gained 72 lbs when i was pregnant with my son. i lost all of it within the first 6 months.
You can watch your calories while pregnant as long as you are eating enough. While pregnant you will need about 300 extra calories a day. I would talk over any diet and exercise plans over with your doctor as soon as you get pregnant to make sure you are doing it correctly.
Not over eating and getting some exercise while pregnant is good for you and the baby but only as long as you don’t over do it.
