I’m A 15 Year Old Girl On A 680 Calorie A Day Diet To Lose 15 Lbs From 132 How Healthy Is This And Any Tips?
Hi, I’m Maggie and I’m a 15 year old girl from Iowa. My basketball coach wants me to lose 15 more pounds down from 132 pounds. I’m in great shape and run about a 6 min mile but he still wants me to be lighter. To do this he has decided to put me on a 680 calorie per day diet and also make me workout daily. When we work out I run a long way then do a lot of light weight high rep (35 reps at a time) weight training followed by me on the tread mill and him accelerating it until I can barely stay on. I am always hungry and miss real food anyone that any suggestions on a better way for me to get the lean tone muscle that my coach wants me to have please let me know. I was also wondering if there are any supplements or vitamins I should be taking. Thank you so much for your input.
Bluntly, your coach needs to be fired! At only 680 calories, you’re not consuming enough calories to even cover basic body functions. This will most likely make you weak and ill. You’ll be no help to yourself, let alone your basketball team. You need to talk with your parents about this, and they need to do something about that coach.
This is not a good diet for you. You need to stop it now before you do harm to your body. Tell your coach to jump in a river.. You need a balanced diet. 680 calories is ridiculous.. Stop playing with your health. Does your parents know you are doing this? I cannot imagine them letting you do this. Eat a balanced diet .. you are already exercising.
Oh girl! This is nuts! First off, you’re probably still growing and NEED to eat. Second of all, you’re athletic, so even if you weigh 132, I’m betting you’re muscular. 680 calories is ridiculous. You should be eating at least 1200. If your body burns more than it takes in, your metabolism will slow down, and eventually your body won’t burn the fat, it’ll burn the muscle you’ve built.
First off, your coach should know better. It’s great that you do a run to warm up and then use weights at a low weight, high rep. That builds lean muscle. As for the treadmill, I don’t know. I know your coach is trying to get you into anaerobic training (which burns fat faster), but if you’re almost faling off the treadmill, that’s not right.
You should be taking at least a mutivitamin once per day. I know this is gonna sound weird, but as an athlete myself, I find the best vtamins are the multiviamins for pregnant women. I’ve also found some of the bottled vitamin water to be good as well, but be careful to check because some of them have as many calories as a can of soda.
As for eating, I really think you should be eating more calories. One way that I’ve found that has worked wonders for me is to eat six small meals a day over about 12 hours. So basically it’d be like:
Breakfast: cottage cheese (a protein) and 2 slices of wholegrain toast with a little bit of margarine or butter.
Snack: veggie or fruit (usually cut) that I prepared at home ahead of time
Lunch: a wholegrain tuna or chicken tortilla with your choice of fresh veggies. If I have chicken I love to have salsa.
Snack: a handful of almonds (I know they’re high fat, but they are also high protein, and it only takes 10-15 whole, natural almonds to feel satisfied. PLUS they have the natural fat that your boy needs.)
Supper: chicken breast (no skin on any chicken) and steamed or grilled veggies
Snack: Fresh fruit or a low fat, low cal treat such as jell-o, or a frozen fudge bar, or something. And yes, they can be found.
I’ve found lots of lean protein, and fiber will keep you full. People think fiber is some horrible thing, but let me tell you, I am THE pickiest eater on the planet, and I have found this stuff called Benefiber. It’s tasteless, odorless, and it dissolves into anything so there’s no grittiness in your mouth. I have mixed it into almost anything that has liquid that I eat, and it changes nothing about what I’m eating. It only keeps me full longer. It’s seriously a great thing.
And don’t be afraid of protein shakes. There are ones out there that taste good! My tip is I add 2 teaspoons of splenda, fresh fruit and ice to make them into smoothies and they feel like a treat.
Good luck!
if you are in shape then why would you need to lose wait to be on a basketball team. last time i heard the only teams that have weight limitations are wrestling teams. that is not enough calories for your body to be doing all of that, your coach is pushing too hard.
HI MAGGIE, IT’S DARREN FROM PA ..YOU SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 1200 CALORIES IF YOU WANT LOSE WEIGHT

When I was in gymnastics and my couch told me to lose my some weight I ate 500 a day for about 2 1/2 months. Finally one day I pass out and school and the doc told me I was way too skinny and had to gain the weight back. My couch found out and I was kick off the team. Never did gain the weight back but I wish I could. I hate the way I look and have no control over getting back to my right weight. Basketball isn’t worth an eating disorder.
P.s. Your not gonna gain any muscle eating that less I been lifting since I was 13. I promise you won’t.
Honey, a 680 diet is very unhealthy. It is close to an anorexic state. You could put yourself into the hospital. You need at least a 1,200 calorie diet to be healthy. If you are going to try and lose the weight it would be best if you saw a doctor that specializes in fitness and exercise.
Sorry if I seem mean, just worried.
: D
Oh! And don’t push yourself to hard. Nothing is worth your good health, and 132 pounds is light. I don’t see the difference of 15 pounds in BB. I play BB and I way a good amount over 132,
Your coach is a Nimrod to starve you this way. Any trainer can tell you that you will lose more weight faster if you eat smaller 4 to 5 meals a day of lean meats, veggies, and fruits. Stay off of the fat, carbs that are made up of pastas, white bread, potatoes, and rice. Eat complex carbohydrates from whole grains. You are still growing, and this is not healthy to do this. To eat less than at least 1800 calories a day while training will cause you to store fat.
I was told you need at least 1200 calories a day or else your body will go into starvation mode and it will store fat. Therefore it will be harder to lose weight. You need to eat five small meals a day to speed your metabolism up and drink eight glasses of water.
Okay, I’m sorry, but your coach is a jerk. You should have about 2000 calories a day. If you wanna lose a little bit of weight, cut down your daily calorie intake by 200 calories. But at 132 pounds, you don’t need to lose weight.
Your coach is a moron and should be fired. With all the activity you do you need more calories if anything. 1200 is the minimum and I would suggest that even 1500 is too little for you and your activity level.
Talk to your principal, your parents, etc….This man is not qualified to be a coach. Tell them about the treadmill. That alone proves it.
you need to go to a doctor and see how he feels about this. i doubt he would agree. your coach cant rule your life but he can ruin your health.
I hope this is a joke.
That kind of starvation could literally kill you.
Tell your parents about this diet suggestion.
You should probably also notify the school nurse, or principal if there is no nurse.
That’s not enough…you need at least 1200 cals to function properly.
Get a meal replacement powder from a GNLD store. They taste ok and they’ll really help you to get toned.
As for loosing weight, I don’t think you need to. You’re not a cheerleader.
the least recommended daily caloric intake ranges from 1200-1800 kcal per day. you are only 15 years old and you shouldnt be pressured to lose that much weight. you are athletic and you need as much energy as you can get to play the game.
maybe your coach needs a reality check!!
please don’t just eat 680 calories a day its too dangerous im recovering from anorexia and was liveing on about 500 calories a day not much less that what you would be having just do it the healthy way and exercise or cut out fatty foods like chocolate and crisps but theres no way you can live of 680 calories a day with out starving your self theres other ways to do it please please please don’t starve your self because also if your on just 680 calories a day you wont have the energy to play basketball
Hi Maggie. You never mentioned your height, but unless you are 4′2″ ,you might be threatening you health by trying to lose this amount of weight. You may want to confer with the school principal in regards to this situation. You are still growing, and need food to supply your body to enable this growing to happen.Maybe this coach might not be the right coach for you or your team.680 is way too low for a growing teen.
